A note from the Artist

I wasn’t much of a reader before I started reading my daughter’s work. Actually, I was terrified when she first handed me a 400-plus page manuscript called “The Sapphire Pendant” and asked for my feedback. At most, I read short stories and biographies. I didn’t read genre fiction and had a low opinion of romances.

But the fact that she trusted me, forced me to put away my prejudices and apprehensions. She knew I wasn’t one to sugarcoat things (in art school you grow a thick skin against brutal criticism) and trusted me to give an honest opinion.

I needn’t have worried. “The Sapphire Pendant” not only blew me away, but blasted through a number of the negative thoughts I’d previously had. When we decided that “The Sapphire Pendant” would be the first fiction title for our new micropublishing company, she asked me to come up with an image for the cover.

I immediately started looking at book covers and at the time, found very few covers featuring black women that weren’t sad, angst-ridden, stylized or surreal. I wanted to create a realistic rendering that showed beauty, elegance, and touched on a sense of history and be a little mysterious without the image feeling ‘old’.

I went to my drawing table and we agreed on me using oil based colored pencils to get the effect I wanted.

I am honored to once again see this image on the special edition hardcover of “The Sapphire Pendant” and to make this print available so others can enjoy the spirit behind its creation.
